Is It Normal to Get Multiple Colds Each Year?

Coming down with a cold always seems to happen at the most inconvenient times. Whether it be before a trip, a big meeting or an event you have been looking forward to, being sick is never a fun thing to deal with.

Did you know that the common cold is the most common illness in the United States each fall and winter season? There are millions of reported cases every year, so it is incredibly common for you to suffer through two to three different colds annually. Our AFC Urgent Care Greenwood team explains more about the common cold below, so read on!

What Is the Origin of a Cold?

Colds come from a viral infection that settles inside your nose or throat. Many different types of coronaviruses can cause the common cold, so chances are that each cold you have during the season could come from a different virus!

The good news is that although colds are the most common seasonal illness, they rarely produce serious symptoms and will resolve on their own within about 10 days. It is important to stay home while you are symptomatic, though, as you are still contagious to others!

Symptoms to Look For

  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Mild headache/body aches

When Should I See a Doctor for My Cold?

In the vast majority of cold cases, a medical visit is not necessary. Rest and proper fluid intake is typically the best course of treatment while your symptoms are present! However, if you have a fever that just won’t quit, or you feel worse after 10 days instead of seeing improvement, come see us. We can dig into the reason for you.

Another important exception to follow is if you have a sick infant under 12 weeks of age at home. If your child has a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher, taking him or her in for an evaluation is always a good idea. Infections can be particularly dangerous in infants, so being extra cautious is never a bad thing when it comes to your little ones!

Higher Risk Categories for Severe Cold Symptoms

  • Infants
  • Those with a weakened immune system
  • Smokers
  • Those over the age of 65
