How Can I Protect My Family From COVID-19?

While we’d like to think that the threat of COVID-19 has passed, it’s clear that it has not. Cases of the virus have been on the rise in recent weeks as more people are out and about.

With that said, it’s important to do everything you can to protect yourself and others and limit the spread of illness in our community. Read on as our team at AFC Urgent Care Greenwood shares some insight into how to do that.

Am I at Risk of COVID-19?

Every single person is at risk. COVID-19 doesn’t discriminate—it affects people of every age, gender and race. In fact, as of July 1, more than 2.7 million Americans had been diagnosed, including more than 37,000 South Carolinians.

Some groups of people are at an increased risk. This includes those who are obese, those with chronic medical conditions, those who have compromised immune systems and older adults. Pregnant women are at risk of serious illness if they get the virus, so it’s important to take extra precautions.

COVID-19 Symptoms

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose

What Can I Do to Lower My Risk of COVID-19?

Your best defense against getting the virus is still to remain in your home as much as possible. But we recognize that’s not always possible, so it’s also important to practice basic precautions when you’re outside the home.

Social distancing is one key precaution. To stay safe, maintain proper social distance, which means keeping at least six feet between yourself and others when out in public. This limits the spread of the airborne particles that lead to infection.

Other Ways to Lower the Risk of COVID-19

  • If you’re age 2 and older, wear a cloth face covering over your nose and mouth out in public.
  • Avoid large gatherings and crowds.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, taking at least 20 seconds each time.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water aren’t available.
  • Don’t touch your face with unwashed hands.
  • Disinfect commonly touched surfaces in your home, car and workplace often.

If you believe you have been exposed to COVID-19, we are offering COVID-19 testing at our urgent care center. Visit the AFC Urgent Care Greenwood website to learn more or to schedule a testing appointment.
