Do My Kids Need Sports Physicals Before Beginning Fall Sports?

Yes, they do! The state of South Carolina even requires that they have a passed sports physical even before practicing.

Our AFC Urgent Care Greenwood team further explains why sports physicals are necessary below.

What Is a Sports Physical?

A sports physical exam is sometimes called a preparticipation physical examination (PPE), and is an exam that evaluates and ensures the safety of children playing in organized sports.

During the physical, your doctor will look for any health complications that could make it unsafe for your kids to participate in sports by reviewing the family’s medical history and requiring a passed physical exam. We’ve listed the common questions and evaluations of the exam below.

Common Aspects of Sports Physicals

  • Serious illnesses among family members
  • Illnesses that your child may have now, such as asthma, diabetes or epilepsy
  • Allergies
  • Past injuries, including concussions, sprains or bone fractures
  • Whether your child ever passed out, felt dizzy, had chest pain or had trouble breathing during exercise
  • Any medications your child is on, including over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements and prescription medications
  • Height and weight
  • Strength of your child’s heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose and throat
  • Your child’s posture, joints, strength and flexibility

Is It Possible to Fail a Sports Physical?

It’s definitely possible; however, more often than not, it’s not a huge cause for concern. It could be something as simple as rechecking blood pressure a week or two after the initial physical!

If your doctor does find something concerning, like something along the lines of what we’ve listed below, he or she will likely provide suggestions or treatments to better keep your child safe.

Typical Causes for Concern

  • Previous illnesses, such as asthma or diabetes
  • Past bone breaks or muscle tears
  • Poor heart health
  • Allergies to different bug bites, stings, etc.

Make sure to get your child’s sports physical as soon as possible before his or her season starts! We offer them at AFC Urgent Care Greenwood, so don’t hesitate to stop by today.
